“A Tutor Can Make a World of Difference to a Child ” Jerry Pearlman
On the very first day, we put together a team of students that offer free career guidance to grade 9 learners. It is essential to note that at that age, one does not really know what the course they think they want to do truly entail. Therefore having at least one student per faculty who would explain and do further research on the courses offered in their respective faculty would be of great benefit to a young individual that does not fully know all the career options available for them.
Not only would the above prevent these learners from making wrong subject choices, but it would also encourage them to work extremely hard, so as to not land in a different and undesired stream. We currently offer these sessions to any school which we can possibly reach, considering our resources.
We understand that this part of our services is the most essential part of the program. As such, to promote effectiveness, we assign each student to a maximum of four pupils, so as to allow them to effectively know and track their progress. This also encourages responsibility and dedication as there is direct engagement and communication. The student tutor will meet with the pupils on a weekly basis for 2 hours maximum. The only meeting points are the schools of the pupils, as it is convenient for them. This segment of our scope of services is currently operating at a township school in Nyanga, Cape Town, named Oscar Meptha High.
